What is Millboard decking?
A resin-and-mineral composite board made without wood, sold in Australia through Concept Materials. The Enhanced Grain board we have checked is 176 mm wide, 32 mm thick and 3.6 m long, in ten colours, with a 25 year residential and 10 year commercial warranty on the product page.
What joist spacing does it need?
A Millboard guide hosted on Dahlsens’ Australian site, which is the UK edition and isn’t confirmed as the Australian one, gives 400 mm joist centres for residential use and 300 mm for commercial, bridges, balconies and steps. Boards laid at 45 degrees need 300 mm residential and 240 mm commercial, and any cut board needs at least three joists. Gaps are 4 mm between board sides, 1 mm at butt ends and 10 mm to an abutting structure.
At 3.6 m, the board is shorter than the 5.4 m lengths several Australian ranges use, so a long deck has more butt joints. Count them in the decking calculator.
What frames does Millboard offer?
Millboard describes its aluminium DuoSpan as low maintenance and highly corrosion-resistant, and DuoLift pedestals as for solid, stable bases only. The page we read gives no Australian joist centres or aluminium-frame approval clause.
Cleaning and care
The UK-edition guide says a pressure washer can be used carefully, noting it may make screw holes more visible. Millboard’s UK instructions say mild detergent and a brush, with no solvents; see the UK Millboard page for the detail.
