Should you paint composite decking?

Probably not, and check your warranty first.

  • Millboard says its surface layer needs no sanding, staining or oiling.
  • Deckorum says painting is often unnecessary because newer boards have a protective capping layer. It adds that older uncapped boards may need paint, but paint wouldn’t hold for long.
  • Ovaeda, a UK composite seller, says painting will void the warranty and that most suppliers’ warranties would be affected. It also says capped boards are harder to bond paint to, uncapped boards are more porous and better for painting, and a painted surface wears quickly, so expect to repaint every few years.
  • We couldn’t find a maker’s warranty document that mentions paint. Ecoscape’s warranty requires registration within 90 days and use of its recommended fixings, and says nothing we could read on painting. Trex UK’s warranty documents weren’t readable.

Treat the Ovaeda statement as a seller’s opinion. Ask your board maker in writing before painting, and keep the reply.

How do you prepare composite for paint, if you do?

Deckorum’s steps are to remove debris, clean with a soft brush and soapy water, avoid bleach, let the boards dry fully, use a paint made for decking and follow the label’s drying times.

What about timber decking?

Timber takes oil, stain or paint. Three products we could read:

ProductDryingCoverageConditions and limits
Sadolin Decking Oiltouch dry 4 hours, recoat 16 hours at 20 degrees and 65 percent humidityup to 10 m² per litre, 1 to 2 coatswood at most 18 percent moisture, 8 to 25 degrees, humidity under 80 percent; bare or previously oiled decking only; may be slippery when wet
Cuprinol Anti Slip Decking Stain2 to 6 hours to dry and recoat2.5 L covers up to 20 m² in 2 coats on bare or previously stained wood, less on rough or grooved boardsnot below 5 degrees, not in damp conditions; anti-slip microbeads, no slip rating given
Ronseal Ultimate Protection Decking Paintrainproof in 90 minutes, 4 hours between coats, 48 hours before furnitureup to 8 m² per litre on one retailer’s listingnot classed as non-slip; from £29.99, VAT not stated

A Wickes listing for a Ronseal paint gives 2 m² per litre, which conflicts with the 8 m² figure, so check the tin. Sadolin advises coating boards on all sides before fixing. Painted or varnished timber must be sanded back to bare wood before oiling.

How do you prepare timber?

Cuprinol’s page says to start clean and dry. New wood should be wiped with white spirit, weathered wood sanded or restored, and painted or varnished wood sanded or stripped. Ronseal’s listing says to remove algae and let the deck dry for 24 hours.

Will paint make decking non-slip?

Ask for a tested rating. See non-slip decking for how slip is measured.

Questions

Can you paint composite decking?

Makers mostly say you don't need to. Millboard says its surface needs no sanding, staining or oiling, and Deckorum says painting is often unnecessary on boards with a protective cap. One seller says painting will void the warranty; we found no maker warranty that says so, so ask yours before you start.

How do you treat wooden decking?

Clean it, let it dry, then apply a decking oil or stain. Sadolin's data sheet asks for bare or previously oiled timber at 18 percent moisture or less, between 8 and 25 degrees and under 80 percent humidity, with one or two coats.

Is decking paint slip resistant?

Not by default. Ronseal's decking paint, as described on a retailer page, isn't classed as non-slip because it hasn't had the required testing. Cuprinol's anti-slip stain uses microbeads but gives no slip rating or test standard.
