How is a composite decking frame built?
Like any deck frame, with tighter joist spacing and more attention to air. A UK builder building for composite starts with the outer frame, gets it level, then fills in the middle, like laying the edge pieces of a jigsaw first. Decide which way the boards run before you start, because the joists run across them.
What clearance and fall does the frame need?
| Maker | Air gap or clearance | Fall |
|---|---|---|
| Eurocell | 150 mm air gap under the deck | 10 mm per metre |
| Guardian | boards at least 50 mm off the ground, 90 mm for pressure-treated timber | 0.5 percent |
| Cladco Signature | 30 mm with composite joists, 50 mm with structural or recycled plastic, in poorly ventilated areas | about 5 mm per metre |
| Ecoscape | at least 25 mm, and not on a flat surface | 1 percent recommended |
| Composite Prime | not stated | at least 1 in 100 |
| Millboard | not stated | slight fall away from the building |
One builder gives the frame a slight fall rather than dead level and sets posts in concrete with the top sloped away from the post so water doesn’t collect at the ground line. He checks the frame is square by measuring both diagonals, and braces it until the concrete sets.
What materials can the frame use?
Pressure-treated structural timber is the usual choice. Treat every cut end, and put joist tape on the joist tops. Aluminium and recycled plastic joists avoid the rot; see the joists guide for sizes and prices. Millboard’s DuoLift pedestals raise a frame from 15 mm up to 350 mm on a solid base. On very low sites, ask the maker about minimum build height, because most makers need airflow underneath.
What about the frame near doors and drains?
Add bracing where people step out of the door, because a bouncy deck shows most there. Leave an access hatch over drainage covers rather than boarding over them. If the deck must sit level with the door, work out the board thickness first: composite boards run 21 to 32 mm, so swapping boards on an existing frame can raise the surface above the threshold, as one UK owner notes.
Which sub frame kit should I buy?
See frame kits for what a kit holds. Whatever you choose, confirm that the board maker accepts the frame; some warranties require the maker’s own subframe. See how to build decking for the full order of work.

- Supports per joist—
- Supports in total—
Support (pedestal or footing) spacing depends on the frame system, load and height. Take it from the frame manufacturer’s span table or an engineer; we do not estimate it.
Timber frames under composite boards must be treated for ground contact where required and checked against the board maker’s frame rules.
This is a preliminary materials count, not an engineering design. It does not confirm spans, load capacity or code compliance.
Questions
How do you build a decking frame?
Set the supports, build the outer frame and level it, fill in the joists at the board maker's centres, add noggins and double joists where boards meet, brace where needed, and give the frame a slight fall. The sections below give the numbers.
What are the framing requirements for composite decking?
A firm base, joists at or below the maker's maximum centres, support under every board end, airflow underneath and a slight fall. Each maker publishes its own clearances and spacing.
Is there a composite decking frame kit?
Kits exist for aluminium and plastic subframes. See our kits page for what a kit includes and what to check. The same spacing and warranty rules apply as for a frame you build yourself.
What is a timber decking frame?
A frame of pressure-treated timber joists and bearers, the most common type. Treat every cut end, use joist tape on the tops and follow your board maker's spacing.
